Plant sterols

It is a well-known fact that high cholesterol is strongly correlated with cardiovascular disease. Keeping healthy cholesterol levels is key to leading a healthy life as small changes in lifestyle can lead to big changes in heart health. Plant sterols are natural components of fruits and vegetables that reduce the absorption of both dietary and endogenous cholesterol. When properly formulated plant sterols are ingested as part of a diet on a regular basis, they reduce LDL (or bad) cholesterol in the blood.

Cholesterol absorption in blood

Cholesterol absorption is reduced when properly formulated plant sterols are added to your diet. Plant sterols compete with cholesterol in micelle formation, thus reducing cholesterol absorption in the blood stream.

Clinical benchmark

In a recent clinical trial Nutrartis sterols not only showed a reduction on LDL cholesterol (12%), but also a lowering effect on triglycerides (14%), while other sterols did not show an effect on triglycerides. A key marker for cardiovascular health is the Total to HDL cholesterol ratio, because it takes into account both the ¨bad¨ and ¨good¨ cholesterol. The chart below shows that Nutrartis sterols outperform all other natural alternatives.

NDS is a novel plant sterol formulation in which free sterol particles have been downsized and stabilized using a proprietary process. This process improves the clinical efficacy of sterols as shown in the results of a research study carried out at the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals, University of Manitoba, Canada.
